| Customer Reviews: Rather Nice August 4, 2010 Tom6823 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well so far it is a really nice machine.
Pros: Nice Graphics, Very very nice display, keyboard is solid.
Cons: Onboard graphics drivers are terrible, the speakers could be better, the mouse pad could be better.
Based on what I have seen so far I would say its worth getting. At first I was really annoyed because I was having display issues with Call of Duty 4 and Civilization IV would crash frequently. Eventually I installed ATI's drivers and it solved those problems. The screen is gorgeous though, its nicer then my monitor on my desktop and that thing is really sweet. The keyboard responds well and I especially like the number pad. It runs rather hot but most laptops do. I have just been setting it up so it is off the surface about half an inch and it runs much cooler now (cooling pad would also work). Oh right and the HDMI port is handy too. The battery lasts about half an hour to 45 minutes while playing Call of Duty on high settings, which is better then I would have expected from a 6-cell laptop battery.
On the other hand it runs into the same problems that all Acer's have rather bad speakers. I mean don't get me wrong laptop speakers are not the best around but these things are very loud and on the loudest setting they distort the sound a little. But I was expecting that from an Acer. Also the customer support for it is TERRIBLE!!! Again that is a problem with Acer though. Luckily I really haven't had any really issue to call Acer about. The mouse pad on it feels a little cheap. I mean I haven't had any problems with it but the pad on an HP or Dell are much better.
Overall its a very nice laptop once you install ATI's drivers. And since it is about $100 cheaper (when I got it) then a different company's essential identical twin it does make it worth it. Just be warned it is an Acer.
Oh right I think it says it comes with Windows 7 Pro. It lies it is Windows 7 Home. Still 64 bit though so not a big deal I guess. I'll try to check back later on after I have played with it more.
Excellent Laptop--especially for demanding video tasks. September 3, 2010 Actmeister (Lost Angeles) AMD recently started offering 3-core and 4-core CPUs for laptops, and this is one of the first to market. It has most of the newest features, and it's 17.3 inch screen keeps you from missing your desktop. What really sets this laptop apart from most others, especially in this price range, is it's video. A dedicated video card with it's own GDRAM is always better, but this is notable as the first laptop I've seen with an ATI 5000 series video card. The result is impressive performance for a good price. It's not a hard core gaming machine. There's really no such thing in a sub-$1,000 laptop. But it does a good job on mid-level, slightly older games like Red Faction Guerrilla. Where this machine really shines is in tasks that require heavy graphics processing like photo editing and especially, video transcoding.
Battery life is listed as two hours, two hours and a half and three hours in various descriptions of this laptop. 2.5 seems about right for average computing chores. Two hours would be a good estimate if you're working it hard. You won't need a notebook cooler, by the way. The heat is exhausted out the left side of the unit and the bottom never gets more than pleasantly warm.
It's comes with Win 7 premium which means you have the media center capability, but not the ability to run XP apps. That requires Win 7 pro which is close to a hundred bucks more than premium at the store. Vista apps run. Xp apps don't. You may want to figure the cost of upgrades into your budget if you're moving up from XP.
The trackpad is pretty good and can be set up to recognize gestures in some programs, a little like an i-phone, but not as complete a set. Still, it's a nice touch. You have to set it up though--the gestures don't work out of the box. As with all new computers you have to burn your own restore disks. There's a little program that pops up that will let you do that easily, but not quickly. You will need four single layer DVDs and a couple of hours. You must do all four at once. If you stop before completing all four, you will have to start all over again with disk number one. You might also want to do this while plugged in, or it will be a race to see if the battery runs out before you finish, as the drive is burning the whole time, which uses some serious juice.
The Wi-Fi is wireless N and works great. It's backward compatible with -b and -g. There is another review on this unit that complains about the wi-fi. I can only assume he either had bad luck, or doesn't know what he's doing.
I can't comment on Acer customer service, as I've had no need for them. I do have a couple of small disappointments. There is no e-sata port which would have made backups to a portable hard drive a lot quicker. Solved the problem by doing my backups over the wi-fi to an e-sata external drive connected to my desktop. I would also have liked a fourth usb port. The card reader is hard to find. It's located on the front edge on the right and has a little plastic thingy to protect the slot. You need to push in on this, as you would a card, in order to remove it. Then you can put the card in. Just be warned--the protector thingy is not attached to the laptop and could easily be lost. I'm guessing that would not be a problem for most people, but it is the only protection from getting dust and dirt in the slot. I would have preferred some kind of flip back cover that just moves out of the way when you stick the memory card in. If none of the stuff I just mentioned matters to you it's probably a five star laptop for you. For me it's still four stars.
For me, the 5000 series video card was much more important than a fourth core, which very few programs use effectively anyway. I'm guessing from what I've read, that this unit is the best balance of price, performance and battery life for my specific needs, and so far I'm very happy. I've had it about six weeks now. Your mileage may vary. If it starts causing problems at some point, I'll post an update.
If all you want your laptop for is watching movies, surfing the web and basic office apps, you can spend less and be perfectly happy. If you want a legitimate desk top replacement or video workhorse on a budget this is a good choice.
no wifi connection August 21, 2010 hoooott 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Unit works fine but the wifi connection will not pick up -- this is my second unit in 5 months -- the first unit I purchased works fine with wifi
I will need tech help. Unit works fine with wire hook up.
